Devastating news about Tom
Sam, Belle and Kammy are busy making preparations for Samson’s return when Charles Anderson arrives with news that stops them cold: Tom King has been brutally attacked in prison and is now fighting for his life. For Belle, who was tormented and manipulated by Tom for over a year, it is a bolt from the blue — her abuser, hospitalised and critical, just as she was bracing herself for his release on strict licence conditions.
But the real bombshell is still to come. As the family struggle to take it in, Cain admits the unthinkable: he arranged the attack. Knowing that Tom and Samson were sharing the same prison cellblock, Cain ordered his nephew to go after him. It was meant to protect Belle. Instead, it sets off a chain reaction that could destroy the family.
Samson pays the price
Almost immediately, the cost becomes clear. Sam takes a phone call and learns that Samson has assaulted someone — and will not be coming home after all. Worse, the latest charges could see him facing a lengthy prison sentence. The homecoming the Dingles had been planning evaporates in a single afternoon.
Sam is incandescent. He accuses Cain of having little regard for his own son, and suggests that neither Cain nor Moira ever truly forgave Samson for what happened to Matty two years ago. Tempers hit boiling point and Sam launches himself at his brother, before storming home and breaking down in tears. The next day, word from Samson himself leaves Sam utterly devastated.
A family at war
Meanwhile, Belle is consumed by anxiety. Tom may be in a hospital bed, but all she can think about is how he might react to the attack — and whether Cain has just handed her abuser the perfect excuse to retaliate against her. Kammy does his best to reassure her and promises to stand by her, knowing she is preparing to revisit the horrific abuse she suffered at Tom’s hands.
With Sam demanding that Cain and Moira pack their bags and leave Wishing Well Cottage, and neither brother willing to back down, Cain puts the responsibility squarely on Belle: she has to make the final decision. It is the last straw.
Belle decides to face him
At breaking point, Belle finally loses her patience and gives both Dingle brothers a piece of her mind, dismantling their arguments one by one. Then, despite every objection in the room, she makes her startling announcement: she is going to visit Tom herself. Cain and Sam are left looking thoroughly ashamed — while Belle, who has already resolved once before that she will not be driven out of her own life, takes back control in the only way she knows how.
At the hospital, Kammy tries to settle her nerves before she goes into Tom’s room. He is far from comfortable with her facing him alone, but Belle is adamant that his presence would only provoke Tom further. Reluctantly, he agrees to give her ten minutes before stepping in to get help if she needs it. And then she walks in.
