How Sadie wormed her way in

Let’s rewind a little, because none of this was an accident. Sadie was recruited by Joe Tate to help bring the Miligans down, and she played her part beautifully — moving into the spare room at Mill Cottage, posing as a friend, and getting to work on the couple from the inside. To Caleb, she was the concerned mate keeping an eye on Ruby. To Ruby, she was the one whispering that Caleb’s concern was really controlling behaviour.

It very nearly worked. Her stirring drove a wedge between the pair, one row even cost Ruby a client, and Sadie was quick to assure Caleb that his wife had a problem with alcohol. But then Ruby had an honest conversation with Laurel and took a hard look at her own drinking. She opened up to Caleb about her late father Anthony and the shadow he still casts over her life — and decided to stop drinking altogether. Caleb promised to stand by her, and just like that, Sadie’s plans were in tatters.

The Woolpack trap

Sadie, though, was not about to leave quietly. Determined to wreck Ruby’s resolve, she waited until nobody was watching and swapped Ruby’s non-alcoholic drink for an alcoholic one. Then, in the Woolpack, she offered to show Vanessa how flirting is done — choosing Ross Barton for a demonstration on the dancefloor before manoeuvring Ruby into his arms in her place.

The timing could not have been worse. Caleb walked in at the exact moment a very drunk Ruby fell on top of Ross. Nobody else spotted him — but Sadie did, and she watched him storm out, furious at what he thought he had seen. Poor Ruby, meanwhile, was horrified to realise she was drunk at all, having been so determined to stay sober.

The lie that sealed Caleb’s fate

Here is where it turns truly rotten. When Caleb demanded to know what had been going on, Sadie told him Ruby and Ross had left the pub together. Over a shared whisky, she kept feeding his suspicions until Caleb was convinced his marriage was over — and that Ruby was in Ross’s arms. On the strength of a lie, Caleb ended up in bed with Sadie.

The next day, reality came calling. Confronting Ruby, Caleb discovered she had never spent the night with Ross at all. He had betrayed his wife because Sadie wanted him to. And when Ruby pieced together who had really been pulling the strings, she demanded an explanation from her so-called friend. Sadie’s defence? That she had only ever been looking out for her.

Kicked out of Mill Cottage

Caleb’s own response was blunter. Getting Sadie alone, he made it clear her stay was over and ordered her to move out that very day. Whether Ruby ever forgives him is another matter entirely — and whether one night of betrayal can stay secret in a village like this one is, frankly, doubtful.

And the fallout is far from finished. Next week, Joe threatens to expose Caleb’s night with Sadie, while Sadie herself is sitting on hidden camera footage of the affair — so this story has plenty more damage left to do. We have rounded up everything coming in our next-week spoiler guide if you want the full picture.

What do you reckon, then — is Caleb and Ruby’s marriage strong enough to survive this, or has Sadie done lasting damage? Have your say in the comments below.
